I will start this post by saying I am a morning person so this may be easier for me than others.
I have been teased by friends for being an “old lady” because of how early I go to bed and how early I wake up. I know from my past experience that how my mornings go can easily effect (good or bad) the remainder of my day. That’s why this year I decided to be more intentional about how I conduct the first part of my day.
I even wrote as a daily goal, Intentional Mornings.
My 5 Essentials to an Intentional Day
1. Talking to God.
2. Spending time in God’s word (quality over quantity).
3. Nurturing my marriage.
4. Quality/Distraction Free time with my daughter.
5. Eating well, including drinking enough water.
Based on these items I rearranged my morning routine to hit all of my essentials first thing in the day. It was also important to me that I keep things simple so that it fits in with my big goal of slowing down and simplifying. As I mentioned before, I know everyone’s list will look a little different but there are a few key elements that I believe are important in making mornings matter. First off, working in some sort of quiet time whether it is meditation, prayer, or just 5 minutes staring out the window as you sip your coffee, brings a sense of peace to the day ahead. I like to get up before the rest of the house to have this time alone each day. I enjoy this quiet time so much now that I wake up at 5am easily without hitting the snooze button once- even though I can’t fall asleep at night and I am up 2-3 times a night (#pregnancyproblems). I also feel strongly that to make mornings matter you should do your best to avoid things like email, social media, text messages, and television right when you wake up. Give yourself some time to reset before refilling your head and to do list with the day in front of you.
Give yourself the gift of living in the present moment- even if it’s just for an hour a day.
I have been following this morning routine for the last 3 weeks now and love how I am able to focus on what matters most before being bombarded with the outside world each day. Below I have shared my morning routine along with some tips that have worked for my family…..
My Morning Routine (times vary a bit from day to day):
*Note: I try to set myself up for success the night before by making lunches, starting the dishwasher, and setting up the coffee pot.
I do these tasks while I am cleaning up dinner and they are super helpful in making the morning easier.
Start a fire while the water warms up for coffee.
Snuggle into the couch with my journal and Bible, a warm blanket, and coffee for some quiet time.
If time allows I also will use this time to read my current book. I keep my phone in the other room to avoid temptation.
My husband gets up so I switch my focus to him.
Coffee together by the fire. This has been awesome for both of us. It’s great to be able to spend quality time together before he rushes out the door.
I then help my husband get ready for work by packing up his lunch (made the night before), making green smoothies for the family, and making his breakfast to-go. My husband works long hours and has an hour commute so I want him to feel appreciated as he heads out the door. He has also started emptying the dishwasher (thank you cousin Robbie for the suggestion) before he leaves which makes me feel appreciated. These simple changes and acts of service for one another has done wonders for our marriage and does not require a lot of effort.
My daughter is up between 6:30-7:00am. I try to snuggle with her a bit before making breakfast and finishing getting my husband ready.
I make her breakfast and smoothie while I am helping my husband. I make both of them a version of the same breakfast each day. My husband likes an egg sandwich and my daughter likes a bagel or waffle with cream cheese. I pack the nutrition in with a green smoothie. This makes things simple and I don’t have to worry or think about what to make each day.
Once my husband leaves at 7:30am I try to give my daughter my full attention. This is an area I am working on since I tend to try and multi-task. If I can, I sit down with her as she eats or play with her after she gets ready. I also try to get myself ready a bit during this time so I don’t scare the neighbors at the bus stop.

Once I am home, I finish getting ready and do a few quick chores before sitting down to the computer for work by 9:00am.
Of course my routine will change once the new baby arrives but I hope to be able to remember how important it is to start my mornings off focusing on what matters most.
